Even though this book was written for a youngster, as a retired person who is a veteran of the Vietnam era, sometimes called an unpopular war with both soldiers and the people back home, I enjoyed this book and learned a lot. I didn't realize for example that Ho Chi Minh organized a guerrilla force in World War II to take on the Japanese who invaded in 1941. I just had vague recollections of France being in power there. I also didn’t know that Mao of China and Stalin of Russia supported Ho while Harry Truman of the U.S. didn’t. When France was kicked out and the country was divided into North and South, shortly thereafter the U.S. got involved in this quagmire of a war, is when my knowledge of it began, but many young people weren’t there, weren’t involved in the war or the protests against the war. This book is short but covers a heck of alot, from important battles, to weapons, to the Viet Cong, to Agent Orange to Kent State.
I thought this book would be long read. I was actually excited to see that this book is an illustrated one, meaning… it's less boring and more fun especially if your are reading about history. The book contains summarizations of Vietnam Wars highlights and each one is illustrated. Although this book was made for better understanding and memorization of specific events, I find it hard to connect each events to the next one. Somehow it doesn't feel like it was telling a story and the author just laid out each events on every pages. So, for me as a reader didn't exactly understand what was happening and why does a certain events took place. As I read through this book I was filled with "why's?".Although the book setup was a bit confusing for me, I can't deny the fact that this book is a good source of information. The book covers highlights of the war, war experience which discuss some war tactics, solider's experiences, war weapons and vehicles used. This book made it a point to let us understand how scary it is when a war took place. Hopefully, we people should learn from our past and somehow make it a point to never see "war" as an option towards peace.
This book is very helpful in understanding the chronological events that led to the downfall of the Republic of South Vietnam. It encompasses the time when the French government ruled over Vietnam but overthrown by revolutionaries. They were then known as Vietnam’s National Liberation Front which was later renamed Viet Cong. The series of events continues on why Vietnam became divided and how the United States of America got involved in the war. It touches on significant U.S. military operations and how the media played its role that led to the pull-out of U.S. troops from South Vietnam in 1973.While the book is presented in an illustrative format, the information imparted was concise and easy to comprehend. For this reason, the contents therein are adaptable to the young generations who are yet to be born long after the era of the war in South Vietnam.
I enjoyed the e-book Simple History: The Vietnam War because of the way the story was told and the format used. This book is almost like reading a comic book that explains the history of Vietnam from after the surrender of the Japanese through the involvement of American troops. I've read a couple of other books about the Vietnam War, but, this short book explains the Vietnam War simply and in a format that should make learning easy. At some point in the future, I will look for other Simple History books.
pretended I didn't have these books for grandson during the holiday, was so disappointed, then gave him a shirt box like gift and he scream out loud with happiness when he saw all three.. interesting books for 9 yr. old.
The author does a great job not only explaining a war that is almost impossible to understand, but goes into detail about people, countries, weapons and the vehicles used. Thanks to Daniel Turner for making history interesting and informative in a way that will keep children's attention and maybe even help adults learn a little something too.I loved the illustrations, the quiz at the end and the definitions of words even adults may not have the definitions for, great job making learning interesting.
My 10 year old loves history and these books are wonderful. I will say that the Vietnam War book is a bit more complicated for him to understand but still a great reference!
Love this book series! The information presented is clear, easy to read, and suitable for my 5th graders who want to learn a little more about the time periods which we study.
