This book teaches the moveable do system of solfege by having the reader do sightsinging from musical notation. Solfege assigns syllables to the 12 notes of a chromatic scale. I definitely think sightsinging is a good way to train your ear, but this book is not a good introduction to ear training. There is no CD, so it's hard for you to know if you're doing it right or not, and there's also not a lot of explanatory text after the first few pages.Everything is in musical notation. There are rhythmic exercises (clap and sing along to musical notation, but with no pitch), sight recognition exercises (naming the solfege functions with musical notation, without rhythm), sol-fa studies (singing the solfege symbols without musical notation), melodic studies (sight-singing from musical notation, with rhythm)The workshops increase in difficulty by introducing new keys, new time signatures, and new scales. You start with major scales and then move to minor (melodic, real, harmonic), and then go into modes.I think the useful idea of this book as that you should sightsing everything to establish your inner ear. But you don't need this book to sightsing, you can do that with any introductory book that teaches you to sight-read on your instrument, once you understand the solfege system.A better book is Ear Training for the Contemporary Musician, which also teaches moveable do solfege (although they don't call it that), and comes with a CD of exercises where you have to transcribe scales, chord progressions, and so on. It also has a lot more explanatory text which really helps explain some basic music theory concepts.Another book I've just come across which I like (and has two CDs) is The "Real Easy" Ear Training Book which focuses on hearing the chord changes to popular songs and is a good followup to the book by Wyatt, Schroeder, and Elliott.

I can see this book being very usefull as part of a university degree, in the classroom, with a teacher and classmates to help out. The theory covered on the first chapter is small but good quality overall. The exercises are interesting and well explained.I found really hard to take advantage of this material on my own. I couldn't measure my progress and correct my mistakes properly. In the end, I found that Hearing and Writing Music: Professional Training for Today's Musician (2nd Edition) was much easier to study on my own.

This is a great book for visual-ear training.Step by step, the exercises take you to the point of hearing what you're reading!There are no "blind tests" though; maybe a CD including some audio drills could be the perfect complement.

Every music teacher and musician should have this book it's perfect for practicing rhythm reading, ear training, and sight singing.

This book, while some of it is super outdated, is also really helpful and motivating.NOTE: This was published May 29th 2007, I read it in 2016/2017.The tone of the book was perfect; It was professional with a splash of humor here and there. The humor really helped me to stay engaged in the reading.The information itself is really helpful. Like I said above, some of it is outdated, but many, many times I found myself jumping on my computer to try something that the text suggested. There is a lot of really great insight in this book!Some of the main topics and passages that really stuck with me include:* Analysts must have a customer-centric view that enables them to think like customers.* Customer-centric web design is key- you must shift from "the site visitor needs to do what I want them to do" to "the site visitor is doing whatever they wanted to do" and having success.* Report creators and analysts are different- the ability to see the big picture is what an analyst does.* Everything starts with objectives and desired outcomes; "Tell me your objectives and I'll tell you what insights I can provide with the data I have."* The upward trend in user wariness with paid campaigns puts the focus back on SEO.* Data will never tell you the why.* A dashboard=1 single page, any long and that's a report.* PPC can deliver visitors, but often it comes at a great cost and is suboptimal for building long-term relationships with customers... you are "renting" traffic.* "In reality, a while bunch of traffic for most websites comes from the top 20 or so key phrases."- are you optimizing for those 20?* The three greatest survey questions ever: 1) What is the purpose of your visit to our website today? 2) Were you able to complete your task today? 3) If you were NOT able to complete your task today, why not?Tips I also loved included:* The So-What Test: Ask every metric that your report on the question "So what? three times. I've been promising this book review of "Web Analytics: An Hour a Day" by Avinash Kaushik for near six months and it has taken every week of six months to finally make it all the way through this book. I've spoken many times about Avinash and his wonderful blog "Occam's Razor" which this book being the pinnacle piece of the writings on that blog. Avinash is an analytical genus and the knowledge and experience he pours into this book are unbelievably practical, but even more important downright effective.As I mentioned it took me six months to make it through this whole book. The problem wasn't the wealth of knowledge, but reading through it I constantly found myself stopping to take notes and try out things that are mentioned. Never have I read a book quite like this that packs so much knowledge in a way that I constantly find myself learning so much and wanting to make notes every few pages.Web Analytics An Hour A DayAvinash really strives for this book to be able to stand the harsh test of web time (where a year is an eternity) and does a surprising good job of making it practical even as it's a few years old and will continue to be relevant going forward. The truth is this book is designed to be consumed over a long period of time as the chapters are broken down to be consumed one a month with actionable and learning assignments given throughout. The first few chapters focus on explaining how to build a successful strategy and the fundamental things you need to know about web analytics then dig right into monthly chapters starting with "Month 1: Diving Deep into Core Web Analytics Concepts" all the way through "Month 8 and Beyond: Shattering the Myths of Web Analytics". This practical tomb packs so much punch into its pages that I'm sure it will stay on my desk for a long time as a great reference piece.Be warned that "Web Analytics: An Hour a Day" is not a casual read nor is it for someone without a hunger for numbers and data. Bottom line is that if you are truly interested in the field of Web Analytics this tomb is your Holy Grail. I've already written quite a few posts simply from the applied knowledge I've learned from this book and I think anyone that chooses to read it will no doubt come away with tons of practical nuggets themselves.Oh and did I mention the best part is that all proceeds for this book are donated to a couple charities that Avinash has choosen! So go get your learn on and feel good about donating to a good cause by buying this piece of work that will only make you a more intelligent and better informed individual.

I wish I could say that everything in this book is obvious and common knowledge in our culture, but sadly it is not. Before she passed a few years ago my mother admitted to me that she hated me. Honestly, her telling the truth was a gift. For so many years I lived with “emotional confusion” and reading Daughter Detox makes me realize that I am still in the grip of what the author calls the “Core conflict”. Which as I understand it, is that we are hard-wired to seek out and need our mother’s love - no matter how badly she treats us. I have been trying to sort through this in my own mind - aware of the problem, but unable to articulate it exactly - and this book lays it all out and explains it.It’s interesting to me when I share my journey with some of my closest friends of what my childhood was like, they can’t believe it. I am grateful to be a highly successful, compassionate and generous woman (this is how my friends describe me), but I am still tormented by the emotional confusion created by my childhood and the “core conflict” persists to this day.That being said reading this book along with daily meditation and seeing a therapist using EMDR I see my internal self changing for the better.I have purchased and sent the book to several of my friends. I don’t know if they will read it, but I want them to know there is a way out of their suffering.It is probably the height of irony that the isolation, emotional confusion and deep loneliness that the daughter of an unloving mother felt as a child continues into adulthood. But this book is a guide to moving through those feelings, changing old largely unconscious habits and experiencing more intimacy and joy.Is it an easy road? On one level, it is “hard work”, but I am so excited and grateful to be taking this journey.One more observation, the author is not a therapist and not a scientist. However, her work is filled with references to solid scientific research and evidence. This is not a touchy-feely self-help book filled with rainbows, unicorns and BS. I suspect for some people reading it will stir up the reality of what their childhoods were reallly like and that will not be easy to confront. For my own part, I have known for some time how awful it was, I just didn’t know what to do about it. This book is filled with solid observations and insights that are extraordinarily helpful. I highly recommend it!

Thank you a thousand times! I felt horribly issolated all of my life, like I had done something to deserve all that came to me. It did not occur to me until I came across Harlows' monkey experiment. I was the monkey and the result was not good. I left my mother five years before she died. Went to see her during her last days, and hold her hand, she pulled away. My siblings could not wait to tell me that she hated me. She always said she loved all her children equally, what a lie. I have always been jealous of those arround me that had great parents and their ease with life. There are so many lesson in life that she never taught. I was ignored and left to fend for myself, by an educated woman. Here I am at fifty-seven still struggling, at least I am not alone. It has not been easy to be friendless, distrustfull and angry all these years and not know why. Now I have hope that I can recover from years of an unloving mother.

Exponential smoothing methods have been around since the 1950s, and are the most popular forecasting methods used in business and industry. Recently, exponential smoothing has been revolutionized with the introduction of a complete modeling framework incorporating innovations state space models, likelihood calculation, prediction intervals and procedures for model selection. In this book, all of the important results for this framework are brought together in a coherent manner with consistent notation. In addition, many new results and extensions are introduced and several application areas are examined in detail. Rob J. Hyndman is a Professor of Statistics and Director of the Business and Economic Forecasting Unit at Monash University, Australia. He is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Forecasting, author of over 100 research papers in statistical science, and received the 2007 Moran medal from the Australian Academy of Science for his contributions to statistical research. Anne B. Koehler is a Professor of Decision Sciences and the Panuska Professor of Business Administration at Miami University, Ohio. She has numerous publications, many of which are on forecasting models for seasonal time series and exponential smoothing methods. J.Keith Ord is a Professor in the McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University, Washington DC.  He has authored over 100 research papers in statistics and its applications and ten books including Kendall's Advanced Theory of Statistics. Ralph D. Snyder is an Associate Professor in the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics at Monash University, Australia. Groundbreaking approach to exponential smoothing. I found the most useful information to be 1) the inclusion of all 30 ETS models (although some models have limited utility) into a standardized framework, 2) prediction intervals for most ETS models, 3) constraints for the model parameters, and 4) models for choosing the best of the 30 models for each data set.1) The book goes beyond the traditional Holt-Winters, double- and single-exponential smoothing to incorporate 30 potential models. CC Pegels' models are included in this group.2) The prediction intervals have been very helpful in being able to set safety stock levels. In the past, I could only rely on regression models for such prediction intervals.3) There is also a chapter dedicated to parameter constraints that is often overlooked in exponential smoothing.4) The models for choosing which of the 30 models to employ for a given data set help to hone in on the best projectionsI found the book to have covered all major aspects of Exponential Smoothing. I can't imagine employing ETS models without it.

Hugely underrated book. I used it to help me implement my own forecasting software. The combination of theory and algorithm descriptions were perfect for what I needed.I have the Kindle version, which is also great quality.I would really like to see an updated version of this book since it's going on 8-9 years old now. I wasn't a fan of the later chapters since they seemed to be just randomly thrown in there and not as useful as the earlier chapters. I was also hoping to get more out of the later chapters that dealt with ARIMA models and information filters, but I admit that my mathematical maturity wasn't enough at the time of reading for it to make sense to me. For those chapters to be useful you need a good linear algebra background and some familiarity with stochastic processes at a somewhat advanced level.

This work provides for exponential smoothing what Box and Jenkins "Time Series Analysis: Forecasting and Control" provided for ARIMA models -- an accessible theoretical framework.Exponential smoothing is a widely used forecasting method that does well in forecasting competitions because it's robust and flexible.The fact that Hyndman also has a nice R package implementing this framework is an added plus. Currently way over my head. I have some of Hyndman's other titles and I was ok with those. Exponential smoothing is the method used in the new Excel 2016 forecast module so worth getting up to speed on.

Exponential smoothing is a very important topic in time series and Hyndman et al. (2008) provide an accessible introduction to the topic (in Part I and II) and present recent advances (in Part III) on this topic.The authors not only provide thorough exposition on the methodological development of exponential smoothing, but also incorporate a number of practical examples ranging from inventory control, finance and economic applications, which clearly demonstrate the utiliity of their techniques.The techniques presented in this book are potentially very useful to people working in a variety of fields. Business analysts building models and statisticians trying to understand how exponential smoothing method may be extended or generalized to other types of data can all benefit from this book.In addition to presenting interesting and usable ideas in Part IV, the authors' presentation is very clear and easily read. Overall, this is a very good book.
